The battle of Manzicerta (also Manzikert or Manzijert) was fought on August 26, 1071 between the army of the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslān and the Byzantine army of the Roman emperor IV Diogenes at today's Turkish town of Malazgirt, on the north-eastern border of Anatolia, near Lake Van. The clash, started in the unpreparedness and disorganization of the imperial forces, ended in a setback for the Byzantines.
